1/21/06 - Chiang Mai to Pai
Although our scheduled Ethnic Museum visit was thwarted by a closed facility, the enterprising ETcrew arranged for the tailor who was making clothing for many of our group to bring their garments to the Museum parking lot for refitting. We all enjoyed her new baby while the tailor efficiently pinned and marked and she promised to deliver the finished garments to the airport in Chiang Mai before we take our flight back to Bangkok next week. Wonderful service.
A stretch and snack break at a village market allowed us to postpone lunch until we arrived at a country restaurant Bee likes and had a scrumptious lunch. Here we were able to see engravings in the garden studio of a well respected resident artist. All were impressed by the lovely prints and one couple came away with a stunning print memento.
After climbing into our three vans again we ascended into the mountains. Stopping for a walk into the Tha Pai hot springs was a welcome break. Smaller vans have aggravated us Elders’ body aches, Ann being one of the complainers. Thanks to Bob, who sat crunched in the back, Ann rode for this stretch in the coveted front seat next to the driver.
When we arrived in Pai at the Belle Villa Resort we were delighted to find modern bungalows with handsome rooms situated on cunningly designed grounds. The recently flooded Pai River left a rather desolate view but this mountain air is wonderfully clearer and cooler! We met Don our trek guide before we went into town for dinner where we sat with other folks with colds.
