1/5/06 - Mekong Delta
After a good Rex breakfast we headed for the Mekong Delta where we boarded a private passenger boat to cruise down and up the Mekong while our local guide Twoi provided background geography of the river and our destination, Unicorn Island. Here Twoi lead us along a path identifying the flora, mostly fruit trees. We stopped for tea, local honey and snacks, then for slices of Island fruit for all of us to sample, with background music and the opportunity to buy products. Embroidered linen garments were well priced and purchased along with jack wood musical instruments. Soon we boarded row boats, 4 of us in each and rowers who paddled us down the canal to our big boat out on the river.
When we landed on shore our bus rushed us to our riverside lunch spot and huge sticky rice balls we could watch being produced. Unusual elephant-ear fish was also delicious.
Back in Saigon while Ann tried the swimming pool, Bob figured out tipping and checked Internet in the hotel cafe. Walked with our group to the good-bye dinner at the Temple Club, an elegant men’s club with terrific food after wine and farewell speeches. Many of us walked to Godfather ice creamery for another dessert. Some in our group leave tomorrow so Roger and Thuy arranged the dinner early to include them.
