Vietnam Pics Bob and Ann in Vietnam 2005-2006 Eldertreks Tour

  • 1/1/06 - Nha Trang Bay

Nha Trang is a bit sunnier today, especially for our boat rides to and from the fishing village. We transferred to round basket boats each paddled by 2 young girls to land in the village. We all sang "Row Your Boat" and "Frere Jaque" with our girls, about the extent of our common language. In the village we walked along crowded, curvy alleys only wide enough for man powered carts to haul fish and equipment around. Quite charming children made bold by digital cameras and wise to the option to view their pictures were given lots of attention. Nearby we visited the local aquarium, built in the shape of a surreal stucco boat, it is rather gaudy, but the few displays are nice and the large turtle pond outside is intriguing. A short walk back to our boat and we reached the mainland in about 8 minutes.

Lunch high on a hill overlooking the sea was basically a shrimp cocktail salad. On the way out to the bus after lunch we met four Ghanans who said they were football players for the VN provincial team, very friendly and one even knew Marci and Bob’s taxi driver in on a Ghana trip last year.

    Cham Temple

From there we bussed to Cham Temples built in the 8th-11th c. for Hindu dieties. The cone shaped buildings were mortarless elaborately layed bricks. Nice view of harbor from the hilltop, too.

Back to the hotel for free time to check Internet, a walk along the beach and a swim in the pool before dinner. Specialty at this crowded, noisy restaurant was delicious baked potatoes stuffed with shrimp and then on to dessert at the beach- coconut ice cream concoctions-yum.
