We woke up a little after 6:00 to cloudy, cool weather. This was our first break in the heat that we had for the first part of the ride. We had to wait until 7:00 for the café to open. I had yoghurt with granola and mixed fruit along with toast and coffee. This was a welcome break from the typical breakfast and gave me ideas about future breakfasts. I got a Subway turkey sandwich to go and started riding around 9:00.

The route out of Waterton and back to the main road took a detour to Red Rock Canyon. It was a very pleasant 17-mile out-and-back. The canyon was not very special but it did have a small river that carved it through red rocks. It and the wildflowers around it were picturesque. Dick saw a bear on the road almost at touching distance. He got some pictures of it and was warned by a ranger that a bear could out-sprint him and his bicycle. Needless to say, he was more careful later on the trip. I didn't see this bear or the next one where several cars were parked on the side of the road trying to take pictures. Instead, I ate a banana and took some wildflower pictures. I can spot wild things that stand still not wild things that move off into the bushes.

I turned onto the main road with a little mist and temperatures in the 60's. The mist stopped but the overcast remained much to my relief. I was on the prairie now with lots of hay farms. I stopped at a store/café at Twin Buttes and ate my sandwich along with some chips and a Gator Aid. I thought that others from the group might show up while I was there, but nobody came by. I then cruised on to Pincher Creek through beautiful rolling farm land. The ride ended with a nice downhill.

I arrived at the Heritage Inn hotel too early to check in so I waited around in the lobby until my room was ready. After showering, I walked a few blocks to the library where they offered free access to the internet. I caught up on my emails and checked out prices on new laptops. Jim Woo suggested that I look at Toshibas. His job at one time was evaluating laptops and found that Toshiba made a very good one.

Dinner tonight was at the motel. I had veal Parmigiana and a stuffed potato.
