  • July 11 - Day 9 - Cranbrook to Fairmont Hot Springs - Grazing Day

We were up at 6:00 and at the motel's breakfast at 6:30. They had a decent and inexpensive buffet. I had coffee, orange juice, oatmeal and French toast for $5.75. This was the least expensive restaurant breakfast that we had on the trip.

I began riding around 7:30. It was warm already so I had on a light jacket. I stopped once to pick up two green bananas. They were all that the convenience store had. I also stopped in Kimberly, a pseudo Scandinavian town, for a cinnamon roll and coffee. (You have to have coffee in a Scandinavian town). Dick joined me after awhile. After that, I rode on to Skookumchuck and stopped at a store for a sandwich and Gator Aid. My next stop was at Canal Flats where I had bumbleberry pie ala mode. I sat with Dave and Jean Struthers. Mike McMahon came in a little later. You can see why I called this the "Grazing Day".

The roads today were a little hilly, but the pavement was better. There were no rumble strips. There were lots of rollers and some long, straight sections mostly in valleys with mountains on both sides. Most of the area was wooded and there were lots of lumber trucks, pulp mills and sawmills. It did get rather warm later in the day.

    Columbia Lake

After Canal Flats, I rode past Lake Columbia, the source of the Columbia River. It was then into Fairmont Hot Springs. The ride up to our hotel was a real eye opener. It was very, very steep.

The Fairmont Hot Springs Resort is first class. Our room was large and had two queen-sized beds. It was air conditioned and had a balcony overlooking the grounds. All the amenities were there including a coffee maker, TV and useless internet access. The hot springs pools are filled with geothermal heated water. It is not sulfuric so it doesn't smell. The hotel has a small pool while the public area has a huge one with many tourists.

I had dinner in the pub - a good hamburger with bacon, mushrooms and cheese.
