Belle Fourche - Geographic Center of the Fifty States of the USA

We drove a partial loop today after leaving Rapid City. We went north to Belle Fourche so that we could see the geographic center of the fifty states of the USA. Touring at the city's museum, we saw displays of frontier life. Outside was the mark of the geographic center.

Driving west on Highway 24, we crossed into Wyoming and soon reached our next stop at Aladdin General Store. This store opened in 1898 and is still in operation. It is very remote so it carries a wide range of merchandise. It was fascinating to see an old west business.

A short drive later, we entered Hulett, WY. We had to slow way down before we reaching the other side of town so that we could eat lunch at The Hitchin' Post Cafe. A man was sitting at the only large table and graciously moved so that we could sit down and order. I had a grilled ham and cheese sandwich which was gourmet for their standards. (I hope they don't read this).

Turning south, our next destination was Devil's Tower National Monument. I had never heard of this "geologic feature that protrudes out of the prairie surrounding the Black Hills. It is considered sacred by Northern Plains Indians and indigenous people. You can read here about the Legend of Devil's Tower. This weather was a bit cloudy so I couldn't get very good photos. I did get photos of some very fat prairie dogs.

Our drive continued southeast through Sundance and east to Spearfish, SD. We checked in to the Best Western and then drove to dinner at Killian's. Good beer and food. I had Thai noodles and a berry salad.
