BAC Pics Dakotas Road Trip - 2019

  • May 19 - Rapid City

    Rapid City

This was a day of rest from driving long distances. The entire day was spent in Rapid City. After an average breakfast at the hotel (oatmeal, etc.) we met the rest of our crew and drove over to Cabela's, a huge sporting goods chain that I had never been to before. This visit in our case was prompted by the cold weather. We had not brought clothes that were warm enough. Ann bought a nice parka while I bought some heavier pants. The quality was very good.

Our next stop was at Target where Juan needed to pick up some items.

Both of these stops were near our hotel. For lunch and sightseeing, however, we drove into the downtown area. We decided to eat at the Firehouse Brewing Compamy mainly because of its voluminous advertising along the roads leading into Rapid City. It did not meet the expectations from the billboards. Not many customers were inside and we were seated in a large booth in a quiet area. Our waiter was attentive and the food and beer were OK. I had an IPA and a Reuben sandwich.

Next to the Firehouse, was the Prairie Edge and Sioux Trading Post. This was a store recommended by friends to visit. It was a large two-story store filled with Native American products, fine art, books & music, craft supplies, botanicals & herbs and blankets & quilts. It felt like a museum although everything was for sale.

Leaving the store, we walked a short distance to Art Alley. We briefly browsed the public art display before the weather pushed us back to our cars and the hotel.

Back at the hotel, we discovered that housekeeping picked up our hand towels and soap but forgot to give us new ones. I took them from their cart in the hall. The bar down on the main floor next to the water park had better service. We ordered our free drinks from the bar tender who filled our wine glasses up to the top.

At dinner time we drove back into the city to Colonial House and had a good dinner - pork chops & ribs, rosemary bread and outstanding crispy peanut chocolate cake.
