    The Corn Palace

May 17 - Kansas City to Mitchell, SD - At 8:45 we left Kansas City with the Bensons and Matutes in our two cars. We drove through Kansas, Missouri, Iowa and Nebraska retracing part of our route from a few days ago. Floods over the lowlands had not receded. Because of this, we had to bypass part of I29. Rain was intermittant until it was not. It came down very hard. Our lunch was at a Subway somewhere along I29.

We reached Mitchell late in the afternoon and drove directly to the Corn Palace. The rain had stopped but it was cold and windy. It was too late to enter the palace. That was OK with us because the attraction was on the outside. Each year the building is redecorated with new corn, grain and grass to showcase a new theme. This is supposed to happen before the season starts in May, so I think that we saw the latest theme. Because of its military theme, I took a photo of John standing in front of his Coast Guard panel. Juan did not pose in front of the Army one.

We spent the night at the Hampton Inn. Dinner was at the Depot, a renovated train depot.
