    Gullfoss Waterfalls

We have anticipated seeing the Northern Lights. So far the nights have been cloudy making it impossible. The days have been nice including today's sparkling blue sky in the northwest tip of Iceland. As a consolation, we crossed the Arctic Circle, a first for all of us. Ann, Ellen, Lynne and I booked a five-hour "Journey through the Westfjords with Dynjandi Waterfall" with Shoretrips. We have been warned in the past that tours that are not affiliated with the shipping company could be unreliable by missing a ship's sailing time and that we would have to find our own way to the next port to meet our ship again. This is bad advice. There are now several legitimate tour companies that we can trust. We have used this one in the past and will continue to do so. They have good agendas and are less expensive.

The four of us took a tender into the dock. We were early, so we walked up and down the pier until it was time to meet our mini busses. Because we booked at different times, Ellen and Lynne had to ride in a different bus with a bunch of strangers. Of course Ann and I were on a bus with strangers too. This was disappointing, but livable.

We drove through the countryside with green fields, treeless hills and beautiful lakes. Pavement gave way to a well-maintained gravel road. We eventually arrived at Dynjandi Waterfall along with many tourists that emerged from several full-size busses. The view of the series of waterfalls was spectacular with the crown of Dynjandi spreading its tentacles at the top of the mountain. I set out on a path that goes up the mountain to the waterfall at the top. The path was rocky, steep and slippery making me overly cautious. I can't climb as well as in the past and was especially wary of all of the other people on the path. I made it up to the bottom of Dynjandi, took some photos and made my way slowly back to the bottom. I passed Ellen who made it all of the way to the top.

On the way back, we stopped at Hrafnseyri which is a museum and a coffee shop which is inside of an old turf house. We had cake and coffee sitting outside with other busloads of tourists.

We got back to the ship in time to have a late lunch.
