    Grounds at the Delta Hotel

The Hotel - The Hotel Delta is a large hotel on the outskirts of Palma. It has a large partner hotel next door in which I stayed last night. The Delta is a cyclists' magnet attracting bicyclists from around the world because of its location near the airport and because it has bicycle facilities. There is a rental/repair shop, a large bicycle storage area and a bicycle shop where you can buy clothing, etc. The bicycle facility is owned by Max Hurzeler, a former cycling champion from Switzerland. Albert Zweifel is the professional mechanic. It has a good cycling package and excellent rental bicycles, as Bill Todd can attest. The rest of our BAC group had our own bicycles, but we used the storage area and the cyclist's lunch while we were registered at the hotel.

The grounds of the hotel were nicely landscaped. The rooms were adequate - clean and comfortable - with decent-sized bathrooms. There was supposed to be free wifi in the computer room, but it wasn't working when we were there. I had to slip Euro coins in the slot under the hotel's PCs to get onto the internet.

The Food - The breakfast buffet was excellent - like the ones you see in Germany. I wasn't surprised because there are a lot of German tourists on this end of the island. There were lots of fresh fruits including figs, melon, oranges, etc., cereal, meats, cheese, eggs, potatoes, breads and even decent coffee. I sat at a long table with other BAC people and got to know some of them.

Lunch was in the same restaurant as breakfast. It was a E20 buffet. Very good but a little over-priced. I had several dishes including fish, seafood salad, potatoes, vegetables and others. Dessert was coffee flovored flan, a baked, purple pear and lemon sorbet. I ate with Mary Love and Bill Nast from Pittsburg PA.

We had dinner in the same restaurant. The food was the same as at lunch. It was getting very monotonous already.

Non-Cycling Activity - After breakfast, I went to the bicycle area and put together my Bike Friday. Other group members were doing the same so we had some good conversations. I tested my bicycle and then put it into the storage to await the ride tomorrow. Then I changed my room from one hotel to the other.

After lunch, I wandered around the grounds and took some pictures, I tried unsuccessfully to use the hotel's wifi and ended up using its pay-PC. When I went back to my room, my roomie, Bill Todd, had just arrived and was unpacking his clothes. We fussed around for awhile until it was 6:00 pm and time for Happy Hour

We had some appitizers and drinks. Then each of us introduced ourselves to the group and Alison went over the BAC ground rules and safety procedures. Lights out for Bill and me was at 9:30. Because he had just arrived, he was pretty tired and slept very well. On the other hand, I had a lot of trouble falling to sleep - the second day jet lag problem. Tossing and turning into the early morning hours, I fanally got to sleep around 2 or so.
