1/30/2006 - Siem Reap to Bangkok
Another early start to drive to Rolous group, in a nearby region with a series of early Angkorean temples from the 800’s. One restored in the 12c. is quite handsome. Not as crowded here, though still Asian tour groups around.
After 3 days of Wats familiar themes recur - the larger ‘male’ temples dominating the Eastern vantage point and the smaller ‘lady’ temples almost hidden behind. Many brick buildings here are better preserved than the larger more famous limestone construction built later at the more famous sites.
We got in a quick visit to ‘Artisans de Angkor’ in Siem Reap where hearing impaired young people are trained in skills to reproduce temple artifacts, silk screen, lacquer ware, wood and stone carving-all for sale to visiting tourists. Our last stop was the thriving Market which Bob’s images describe far better than words.
Our tasty lunch at the famed Foreign Correspondence Club featured pork chops with cabbage, potato leek soup and chocolate soufflé. Then back to Journeys Within to swim and read until 4 when Nan drove us to the airport for a 3 hour wait for our flight back to Bangkok and familiar home away from home Royal River Hotel.
