  • May 27 - Florence to Berkeley

I finally made it home. I got up at 4:45 and checked out of the hotel a little past 5:00. The hotel was supposed to have a boxed breakfast ready for me, but it wasn't there when I left. I can only imagine what a boxed breakfast would be - a hard roll, cheese, maybe some meat. I wasn't too upset.

The taxi got me to the airport in about 10 minutes. When I looked at the checkin counter, I saw a very long line. The line, however, was in front of the Lufthansa counter. My flight was by Austrian Airline and there was nobody in front of its counter. So checkin was a breeze.

No food shops were open yet at the airport, so I sat around for awhile and then finally ate my last Mars Bar. It pepped me up alot. I was coming down with a bad head cold and needed something to improve my spirits.

Austrain Airlines took me to Vienna and then to Frankfurt. Both flights were on time and they both served snacks. So I had some nutrition to keep me going.

The flight from Frankfurt to San Francisco was by United. By some quirk of luck, I was seated in Economy Plus which gave me extra leg room. It was a very comfortable flight although it was way too long. Janet Monks was on the same flight, but she was in the back of the plane and I only saw her once.

Ann picked me up at SFO and we struggled to get out of the parking garage. We got home and my son-in-law, John Martin, was here to greet us as was KD, our affectionate mutt. I was too tired and felt too ill to stay up and chat, so I took a shower and went to bed around 9:00. It was nice to be home.
